Located at the Adelaide Farmers’ Market at the Adelaide Showgrounds, each Sunday from 9am – 1pm South Australia’s largest food and flower farmers get together to put on a great show. You can meet the farmers from some of the state’s biggest producers, like Falg Nurseries, McLaren Vale Natives and Olympus Flowers. Get in early to get the best selection of flowers before everyone else has nabbed them up!
From the first survey for the map of Adelaide, Colonel William Light planned for a botanical garden. However, it wasn’t until 1854 that the gardens were actually established at the current location, and officially opened in 1857. Check out the German designed Palm House – the second oldest greenhouse in Australia – and the National Rose Trial Garden. The latter is the first garden of its kind designed to test different roses for their suitability to the Australian climate. The Gardens are open all year round and welcome to the public.
Despite the presence at the Adelaide Showgrounds every Sunday, the city is still lacking a centralised flower market to compare with those in some of Australia’s other larger cities. As a result, florists are reliant upon a few of the big flower companies to supply them, reducing the available choice and making it harder to access farm-fresh flowers.
