Little Bay Beach is a hidden gem in Sydney’s eastern suburbs. While the more popular beaches of Maroubra, Coogee, Yarra Bay and Congwong Beach can often be quite busy, Little Bay Beach is typically quiet. This may be because it’s only accessible by a steep wooden staircase. Nevertheless, the beach is a popular spot for snorkelling and swimming as it’s protected from large swells, however it is unpatrolled, so do take care. Interestingly, there is a shipwreck located off the coast of Little Bay: the SS Kelloe collided with another ship, the SS Dunmore, in calm waters and sank within 15 minutes. The wreck sits at a depth of 50m and can be accessed by experienced scuba divers.
Elsewhere in Little Bay, you’ll find St Michael’s Golf Club and The Coast Golf & Recreation Club, two popular links courses offering stunning views of the headland and the Pacific Ocean. The area was once home to Prince Henry Hospital, a former infectious diseases and teaching hospital established in 1881. Though it was consolidated with the Prince of Wales Hospital in Randwick and ultimately closed in 2003 for redevelopment, a Nursing & Medical Museum onsite maintains historical records and artefacts related to the hospital. The Coast Chapel, a beautiful, heritage-listed war memorial chapel overlooking the ocean, also remains and offers a lovely venue for Christenings, baptisms, weddings and more.
